How to Age Muslin using Mordant & Instant Coffee

Are you ready for a fun, super easy and creative tutorial? I’m going to show you how to age muslin fabric using instant coffee and walnut mordant.

This technique is perfect for adding a vintage touch to your embroidery, quilting, or sewing projects. So grab your supplies and let’s get started!

Supplies needed:

  • Instand Coffee
  • Walnut Mordant
  • Heat Proof Bowl like Pyrex
  • White Vinegar

Step 1) Put 1 tbs of Instant Coffee and 1 tsp of Walnut Mordant in a heat proof bowl, add 2 cups very hot water. Mix until dissolved.

Step 2) Add a piece of dry cotton muslin or any cotton fabric you want to age. Push fabric around until it’s completely saturated. Let soak for 1 hour.

Step 3) Hang to dry.

Step 4) Add 1 tbs white vinegar to 2 cups of water and put the dried muslin in and saturate, soak for 10 minutes.

Step 5) Rinse well and hang to dry. Enjoy the results!

You can experiment with your own recipe, add less coffee and more mordant or maybe a tea bag? Pro tip: each time you make a new recipe write it down! Don’t depend on your memory! And if you create a color you just love and can’t remember the recipe you’ll be very frustrated, so write it down 😉

Happy stitching!
