Week 5 of the Needlework Challenge – Finishing Some UFOs

Welcome to Week 5 of our Needlework Challenge. Can you believe we’ve been at this for over a month now? Time flies when you’re having fun with needle and thread!

I’m going to tackle a topic that many can relate to: finishing those unfinished projects, also known as UFOs (Unfinished Objects). We all have them lurking in the corners of our sewing rooms or hidden away in drawers. But fear not! This week, we’re going to conquer some UFOs together and finally give them the attention they deserve.

The Unfinished Project Dilemma

Starting a new project is always so exciting. We dive in headfirst, full of enthusiasm and creative energy. But somewhere along the way, life happens, other projects catch our eye, and our once-beloved project gets left behind. It becomes an unfinished project, haunting us with feelings of guilt, disappointment and if you’re anything like me, anxiety.

Fret not! You’re not alone in this struggle. We’ve all been there at some point. And today, I’m here to tell you that it’s never too late to pick up where you left off and finish what you started.

Embrace the Challenge

This week is an opportunity to get some UFOs finally finished. Imagine how satisfying it will be to see those half-finished quilts transformed into cozy masterpieces or those abandoned embroidery projects come to life with vibrant colors and intricate stitches.

So let’s roll up our sleeves and get down to business!

Assessing Your UFOs

This, for me, is the most important part! The first step in tackling your UFOs is to assess what projects you have that are not finished. Take time to go through your collection of unfinished projects and make a list.

You can use my Needlework Project Planner Printable to write down each project’s name, its current state of completion, and any additional materials you may need to finish it.

I bought a box of large ziplock bags and put each UFO into its own bag. This has been a game changer for me, before I did this I had the projects in piles getting very messing and disorganized.

Once you have your list, prioritize your projects based on your level of excitement and the amount of work needed to complete them. Remember, this challenge is all about reigniting your passion for needlework, so choose projects that spark joy and inspire you.

This week I finish 3 UFOs, a Christmas Stocking, Pin Cushions and a Button Garland

Breaking It Down

Now that you have your list and you’ve chosen what project or projects you will work on, it’s time to break down each project into smaller, manageable tasks. This will help prevent overwhelm and make the process more enjoyable. For example, if you’re working on a quilt, break it down into steps like piecing the top, quilting the layers, and binding the edges.

By breaking down your projects, you’ll be able to focus on one task at a time and see progress more quickly. Plus, completing each task will give you a sense of accomplishment and motivate you to keep going.

Set Realistic Goals

As much as we’d all love to finish every single UFO in one week, let’s be realistic here. We want this challenge to be fun and achievable. So set realistic goals for yourself. Maybe aim to finish one or two projects during this week and save the rest (there are other weeks in the Needlework Challenge where this will be repeated).

Remember, needlework is meant to be enjoyed, not rushed. Take your time with each project and savor the process. What matters most is the joy and satisfaction you get from creating something beautiful with your own hands.

Celebrate Your Progress

Throughout this challenge, remember to celebrate your progress along the way. Share updates on social media using the hashtag #52WeekNeedleworkChallenge. I’d love to cheer you on!

And don’t forget to reward yourself for each completed project. Treat yourself to some new needlework supplies or indulge in a little self-care. You deserve it!

The Joy of Finishing

I want to remind you of the pure happiness and satisfaction that comes from finishing what you started. The sense of accomplishment, the pride in your work, and the knowledge that you’ve conquered those UFOs – it’s fantastic.

So let’s embrace this week’s challenge, my fellow stitchers. Dust off those unfinished projects, breathe new life into them, and proudly display our finished masterpieces!

You have the skills and creativity to complete any project you set your mind to. And I’ll be right here cheering you on every step of the way.

Happy stitching!
